Asus extends its P-series portfolio with the introduction of its latest P535 PDA-phone. While this new offering sports largely similar features as its P525 predecessor, the former comes with several enhancements including a speedier processor, larger ROM and an integrated GPS receiver. The Taiwanese handheld maker has also opted to drop the number pad (as seen on the P525) for a more compact, traditional slate-type design. The February launch should see an expected retail price of S$1,188 (US$924.66). (Note: Asus has adjusted the price of the P535 from S$1,088 (US$846.82) to S$1,188 (US$924.66).)

Design
For a GPS-enabled terminal, the P535 is compact. It measures just 109 x 59 x 19mm which makes it 3.5mm thicker than the E-Ten glofiish X500, but with a smaller footprint. At 145g, the P535 is also lighter than the X500.

Overall, we found the Asus a handy size to handle, which we believe most travelers will appreciate in a GPS handheld. Dropping the external antenna lends to a relatively clean design, which should make it easier to store in a pocket. Our only design gripe is with the plain-looking, plasticky exterior and dull grey finish. Nevertheless, the P535 has a rather solid build quality to it.

What's odd is the retention of a 65K-color, 2.8-inch QVGA display as the P525, rather than updating itself with a 262K-color screen which is fast becoming the norm among PDA-phones these days.

Speaking of norms, the quirky number keypad on the P525 has been dropped for a more conventional touchscreen PDA design. The buttons are generally responsive and easy to press. Below the LCD display are the usual navigation controls, call and end call buttons, the left and right softkeys, an OK button and one user-customizable key.

The right panel features volume control toggle and camera buttons, while the left has a switch to activate the hold function and voice command key (customizable), as well as a hidden reset button. The Power button is found on top, along with the miniSD and stylus slots. The bottom of the P535 houses a 2.5mm audio jack, mini-USB port and microphone. The USB port can be used for syncing the device to a PC and doubles as a charging port for the battery.

Interestingly, the two customizable keys (below the left softkey and on the right panel) come with a "press and hold" feature. Therefore, with just two buttons, you can assign up to four different functions for easy access.

Located on the rear is a speaker, camera, flash unit and self-portrait mirror plate. There's no lens cover, so extra care must be taken when pocketing the Asus without a protective case.

The P535 comes with a standard bundle of accessories, including a charger, USB cable, handsfree earphones, pouch and user manual/CD. Additionally, it is equipped with a car charger and phone holder for drivers. We like that the holder, which comes with a suction pad base, can be used as a desktop stand for the Asus, too.
